Dr. Ariel Israel is a specialist in family medicine and a data scientist. He holds an M.D. and a Ph.D. degree in bioinformatics, genomics, and human genetics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He is also a computer science graduate, with an M.Sc. in databases theory and engineering from Universite Paris I Pantheon-Sorbonne. He has worked for 6 years as an R&D engineer in Check Point Software Technologies, developing pioneering technologies in the field of internet security and virtual private networks. His Ph.D. research was on the molecular basis of human cancer and for his Ph.D., he developed a novel approach showing that microRNA activity can be detected and measured from its effect on gene expression. This contributed to better understand the key role played by microRNA activity in disease. Upon graduating from medical school, he turned his focus to personalized medicine and developed a data mining infrastructure in Sheba Medical Center aimed to better understand risk factors for disease from the electronic medical records (EMR) of patients. Following his residency in family medicine, he is now heading the department of Research and Data in the division of planning and strategy. He has led numerous research projects uncovering factors predictive of disease occurrence and aggravation, and has recently explored the field of convolution neural networks in medical imaging.
